Modern Solutions | Traditional Living
Modern post-and-beam homes defined by clean lines, open spaces, and natural simplicity.
WHS Homes, Inc. launched the American Post & Beam brand in 2012 to bring a fresh approach to post and beam design and construction.
Rooted in minimalist discipline, modern agrarian aesthetics, and the easy elegance of coastal New England, our homes fuse exposed timber warmth with open, airy spaces where simplicity meets structure. The result is a style that feels both timeless and approachable, built for today’s lifestyle yet grounded in tradition.
We deliver homes featuring exposed timber elements that provide warmth and character while embracing a simpler, more refined post and beam form than most traditional timber frames.
Our homes celebrate clean lines and unadorned structural honesty, emphasizing function, flow, and restraint.
Large windows and open sightlines flood interiors with natural light, blurring boundaries between indoors and outdoors for a seamless connection to the landscape.
We deliver modern post-and-beam homes that balance form and function, structural clarity, biophilic design, and expansive fenestration to create naturally connected, customizable spaces that inspire personal expression.
Post-and-beam structural systems with a lighter, more refined timber aesthetic
Open, flexible floor plans that prioritize flow and natural light
Customizable designs that adapt to site, lifestyle, and program needs
Expansive fenestration strategies to strengthen indoor–outdoor connection
Offsite fabrication for precision, consistency, and predictable delivery
[The service has] been great even though we are near the beginning. Our contact has been responsive and seems to really listen sincerely to what we want. He brings knowledge we do not have to save us from building mistakes. Very pleased.

Our company designs and fabricates complete structural building envelope packages. Each project is unique and can include a wide range of components and services, which means the package cost can vary quite a bit, but typically ranges between $100 and $175 per square foot and represents between a quarter and a third of the overall cost of construction.
Ultimately, the cost to build our homes tends to follow regional “turnkey” price trends for similarly appointed high quality custom homes. Generally starting at $400 per square foot, our client’s preferences and priorities, regional code requirements, and project complexities are driving factors of the overall building cost.
Everywhere! Our homes are shipped throughout North America and internationally.
Timber frame is a classification of post and beam construction consisting of traditional wooden joinery, known as mortise-and-tenon, secured by wooden pegs. There are timber frame building methods, such as the Bent system where posts span, unbroken, from sill to eave or ridge and are erected in walls. (Bents run perpendicular to the ridge of the roof, while walls run parallel to the ridge). Post and beam home construction is a framework based solely on vertical and horizontal pieces: the posts and the beams. Post and beam homes are constructed in layers, with each floor built independently from the others. Typically, the posts and the beams are joined together by metal brackets.
Yes. Our company has collaborated with hundreds of architects to design and deliver homes across the country.
No. Our in-house design studio can work with you to develop a complete set of construction documents. Architects are a good choice for those that have complex design ideas and for those who are looking for a more complete set of plans that may include interior elevations, mechanical details, etc. If an engineering stamp is required, we work closely with our network of engineers nationwide to stamp our customers’ plans.
The design phase is typically a minimum of 3 months, and production is typically 3-4 months, so overall lead time from the beginning of your design to delivering the package is 6+ months. During the prime building months (May-November) our lead times can be greater than 8 weeks.
Complexity of design, engineering coordination, and sourcing of custom materials can also impact the time frame for delivery. We keep a well-stocked inventory of select structural, free-of-heart-center Douglas fir and eastern white pine cants. Other companies are often ordering their timber per-project, which adds significantly to the overall lead time. Our inventory allows us to move more quickly into production once the design is complete.
No, but we work with licensed engineers on any project when required. We can arrange to have plans reviewed by a consulting design professional as needed, such as an architect or engineer.
